Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Question 2:

In my music magazine my main target audience is in the teenage category from the ages of 12-21. My audience is both genders; male and female who are interested into the hip-hop, rock, pop genre of music. I have shown this specific group through my music magazine model's pose and layout of them. My main model in the magazine front cover shows she is represented in a specific group in my genres. She has represented these in many ways such as her posture, clothing, and props.

I have represented my target audience through my model and her mood. My model is shown to be wearing a blue tight fitting top with a nice stylish watch on her hand. This look suggests that she is representing teenagers stereotypically through her casual clothing. The tight top suggests that she is young and the watch gives a sense that she means business. Her style of clothing shows my genre of music which is hip-hop/rock; this has connotations with Selena Gomez music style and Katy Perry. The clothing of my model doesn't just look professional but it also suggests she is young, laid back and wants to relax. The headphones suggest she is still a teen and it goes with my typical genre style for teens. On the other hand the clothing my model is wearing is seen as fashionable and her watch and headphones suggest that she is stylish. This gives readers the sense that my magazine represents them and so therefore this will encourage them into buying it. Furthermore not only the clothing represents the genre of music but it also represents the current season that the magazine is released.

The accessories shown on the model are of some kind of wealth which states my audience's social group is in the middle class category. Her position of posing also suggests she is representing a specific social group. My model is looking away from the camera which suggest she has more power and doesn't need the camera to look at. This Cleary ties in the hip-hop/rock genre.

As you can see my music magazine is shown to be going beyond the idea just a music magazine. I have done this by adding a Muslim girl into my magazine which represents that my music has opened up a completely new industry of music. I have added a Muslim female which shows that my music is genre multicultural and is not just for one ethnicity. My magazine is shown to be breaking the religious boundaries between the different cultures and in fact showing that we can all mix and have freewill. My Muslim model is shown to be smiling which goes against the typical stereotype of Muslim girls that they are too tense and strict, when actually because my female is smiling it shows that even though religion is strict people are trying to subvert it.

My model is also shown to be hugging another coloured person who shows that my magazine is multicultural and it also shows that Muslim girls can mix and are not afraid too. My double page spread therefore challenges society about which culture is dominating whether it is the music culture of religion. As religion has a massive impact in society so I have tried to combine music and religion in to my magazine to show that they don’t need to be a separation between them but in fact they can both work together and create great music. I have shown how music can go beyond religion and culture. This makes my magazine stand out more because I have subverted and tried to challenge society. In all the magazines I have analyzed and have never seen a Muslim girl on the double page spread so I have added her so I can gain a wider audience and so I am not restricting anyone from my magazine. My magazine will be seen mainstream as it can attract all audiences and social groups.

In my contents page I have used another cultural girl. This girl is shown to be Middle Eastern which is not seen in a music magazine. I have chosen to do this so I can gain more audiences and can challenge our stereotypical society. I have also done this so my magazine can influence everyone. This also shows that I don’t want to exclude anyone form my magazine. I am trying to represent every teenage girl and boy with their different cultures. My magazine will have a friendly appeal to audiences and will make them seem more enthusiastic to go and buy it. By adding different cultures I am representing Britain today and the modern 21st society we live in with different coloured people and different social and religious groups.

I have added other images of other Middle Eastern girls to show that I am just representing only Muslim girls and white girls.
