Horror Sounds Recorded

I have recorded some sounds which might help me with my horror film trailer. I have recorded the sound of plastic bags. I have chosen to use this sound because it sounds like some ones eating something and it creates curiosity. (Sound clip 49)

I have done some research when I visited as a class at the London bridge experience. In this trip I have researched what makes people scared and why. I have found out that the darkness is a key element as people don’t know what they are heading for and this created a thrill seeking experience. I have also found that audiences enjoy being shocked because in the London Bridge Experience there was actors shouting and screaming and people and this made it more thrilling. Here is a sound clip of my experience at the London Bridge Experience. I have particularly tried to record the screams as I can use them in my film. However the recording got corrupted so I have no evidence of the London Bridge Experience.

I have also recorded some other sounds such as the carpet rubbing against the wooden floor. I have chosen this clip because it brings tension. (Sound clip 51)

Another sound clip I have research and recorded is a picture one the wall moving side to side. I like the creep tension effect it has. (Sound clip 53)

My last sound effect is of hands rubbing together. I like this sound because it’s intensity toward the sound. (Sound clip 55)

I am hoping to use some sort of sound effect in my horror film. These sound effects have inspired me in my film idea.

Intended audience: My horror film will be appropriate for the 15 and over age rate. People from the age of 15+ will enjoy it because it reflects their identity.

My story;

It is a normal college day and a group of students are standing and hearing this speech about EMA and university funding and the increase. The crowd hearing this speech didn’t know that in that speech there is a few cursing words which can change people into zombies. The person who gave the speech was actually seeing this as an investigation into research on the human body. Then at lunchtime one student who heard the speech started to get really itchy on his arm and he started scratching. The scratch started to get worse on his arm that it started bleeding and so his friend looked concerned and he tried stopping his friend from scratching their skin. Then suddenly the person which was scratching his skin frantically suddenly stopped scratching and froze, and then he attacked his friend and bit him on the neck. At that moment all you can hear is screams and shouting all students are running around trying to get away from him. Meanwhile two students a male and female are in college in a classroom doing some extra studying. The two are in an art classroom doing some extra work, when all of a sudden they start hearing screams and groaning form the corridors. The two people leave the class room confused and wondering what the all the fuss is about they see these horrific ugly creatures eating away at a student and they scream and run away. As the two students scream and run off the opposite direction they grab the attention of the zombies. The zombies then start chasing them. As the two friends are trying to run away more and more zombies start to chase them. The two friends find a place to hide and they start trying to contact their family asking for help. Then form the two friends the male character gets trapped and then killed by the zombies and the female escapes by a hidden passage way.

Story summery;

A normal college day, one college student is trying to make his way through college life. As days go by the expenses of education start to rise, so he attends an open speech about fundraising and the younger generation, knowing little that the speech is actually brainwashing students and turning them into zombies as he eats his friend wreaks havoc over the college. Meanwhile the two friends who were doing extra studying in an art class hear shouting and groaning and go and investigate on what’s going on. They then realise they have to run for their lives to survive.

• The characters relationship between the two friends is that they are class mates.
• The boy struggling with college life, well his relationship toward his friend is that they are best friends.
• The style I want this film is in modern 21^st century lifestyle, keeping the script short and simple. I want to show the ranges of light and tone through the camera shots and angles.
• The length of my trailer would be three minutes long.
• The possible locations I would be heading for is at college, in an art classroom, in an art corridor and other small compact places around the college.

I am intending on carrying and using this idea as a guide line of my new treatment draft. I want this film idea done by college students and I will be using the equipment we are given. The main reason why I am doing this is to show that we are all categorised into some community when in fact we all have a personality and individuality.

Horror genre: George a' Romero

The character I will be researching would be George a ’Romero. I will be researching him because he is one of the main inspirations in the horror genre. I will be talking about his influence in the horror genre.

George Andrew Romero was born on 4th February 1940. He was born in New York City, USA. George is an all-time legend in zombie horror films. He is an all-time American film director, screen writer and editor. He is well known in the horror category under the zombie genre. He was named as the “god father of all zombies”.

Romero was influenced by other films such as Silent and Sound but main influence was the Tales of Hoffman which was his favourite all-time movie. He quoted that “it was the film making, the fantasy a few frightening, sort of bizarre things in it. It was everything. It was really a movie for me, and it gave me an early appreciation for the power of visual media the fact that you could experiment with it. He was doing all his tricks in camera, and there were sort obvious. Those made me feel that, gee, maybe, I could figure this medium out. It was transparent, but it worked.”

George a ‘Romero has written 25 films such as Another night of the living dead (2011), The Crazies (2010), Survival of the dead (2009), Day of the dead (2007), Dairy of the dead (2007), Il pianto della statua (2007), Night of the living dead (2006), Land of the dead (2005), Night of the living dead survivors cut (2005), Dawn of the dead (2004), Bruiser (2000), The dark half (1993), Night of the living dead (1990), tales of the dark side:the movie(1990), Due occhidiolici (1990), monkey shines (1988), Creepshow 2 (1987), Tales of the dark side (1983-1981), dawn of the dead (1978), Martin (1976), the Crazies (1973), Jack’s wife (1972), night of the living dead (1968), he has done many more things with these films such as the editor, the director and even played as the actor in some films.

Horror Film Researches

Film 1:

The slasher genre consists of films having a male antagonist. This is done to freak out its audience. It consists of psychopathic killers which stalk and kill their victims usually in a high graphics. Often the antagonists use a cutting tool most often a knife which represents the phallic symbol. The slasher genre tends to consist of violence, sex, and drugs.

One film I will be investigating will be nightmare on Elm Street. This film is placed in the lasher genre. Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984. Here is a poster of the film.

In this poster there is shown;

•  An antagonist having a small ray of glowing light behind him which represents the amount of power that antagonist has.
• The antagonist is hiding half his face with a hat which shows he is unknown and has no identity, giving us the idea of mystery and fear.
• The antagonist is resting his hands together which suggest he is waiting. This makes the audience feel insecure.
• While the hand is resting together there is a long claw with the tip glowing, this shows the antagonists cutting weapon he will use.
• The antagonist on the poster is also shown to have a slight grin on his face suggesting that he is confident and he is expecting victims.
• The antagonist is wearing a knitted jumper but their one has holes in which suggests he has killed before and succeeded. This shows that all his victims are venerable.

The storyline of the film is that the killer on nightmare on Elm Street called Freddy Krueger picks on a group of friends and torments them. The killer kills the group of friends one by one. He kills in a specific order from the students least pure to the purest of students. By killing the victims one by one he is having the one victim remaining. Nancy Thompson is seen as the poltergeist and she has to fight the antagonist. The killer kills it’s victims in their sleep when they are dreaming or in this case having nightmares.

The equilibrium of the film is a group of friends going to college. The disequilibrium is that the killer is killing then one by one. Film 2:

The vampire genre is a traditional horror films from back in the days when vampires were seen as the main idea of horror. The idea that vampires suck blood from humans was taken from folk beliefs in Africa, medieval times, European times, religious beliefs and Asia. The most common vampire leader is called the Dracula. The vampire horror film was created from folklore and religious beliefs. Vampires and werewolves are shown to not get along in the modern century. The werewolf genre was created around the 18^th century. Werewolves are seen as man beasts. The ideas came from fairy tales such as little red riding hood and the three little pigs. The werewolf concept is also come from ancient Greek literature and methodology. There was folklore, cultures and beliefs which made werewolf films. The vampire connection between werewolves and vampires is that after werewolves get executed in there werewolves identity they get cremated as vampires. The classic example of werewolf is the wolf man (1941) which is a man who transform in to a werewolf at the full moon. The ideas of werewolves and vampires are seen as gothic culture. The two creatures bounce of each other.

•  A dark background with the full moon showing. This suggests that there is something in the darkness which gives the audience the sense of anxiety.

The storyline is that two American students were on a walking tour around Britain and they were suddenly attacked by a werewolf. On friend was killed and the other got hurt. The werewolf is killed however it changes into a human   and the local town people are unaware of its existence. The American student which has survived begins to have horrible nightmare of hunting it’s pray on four feet. He then finds out that his friend and other recent victims appear to him demanding that he finds a way to die and release them from the curse. The friend and other victims are trapped between the worlds because of their unnatural deaths.

The keywords they use are werewolf, American, curse, nightmare and deaths.

The equilibrium is that friends went on a walking tour around Britain. The disequilibrium is that the friend gets killed and the other friend is hurt and then turns into a werewolf. The equilibrium would be to set the souls free by sacrificing his life. There was a re-make of an American werewolf in London in 2009 but however there is no information found in its funding and profit.

Another film I will be investigating will be from the genre of vampires. The film is called Daybreakers. This film was released in 2009. Here is a poster advertising the film.

• Three columns of people in a casing of some kind this suggests that it’s a science style film.
• There are also shown to be four rows of people on top of each other which suggest it’s some kind of body examination test.
• The people are shown to be nude who suggest that all these people have this one identity they share.
• There is shown to be a glowing light blue light in the background which suggest the unknown and gives the audience curiosity.
• The people’s faces are not shown clearly which suggest they have no personality or individuality.
• The people in these glass masked cases suggest an army of people with one identity and only one aim.

The storyline is that in the future vampires take up the majority of the population with only a small percentage of the human race remaining. This makes the vampire lives hard as its survival of the fittest as there is a small supply of human blood. So vampires in that world are doing everything they can to survive. A doctor called Dr. Edward Dalton a vampire and haematologist who are trying to create an artificial blood supply to keep the vampire race going. But his idea changed once he meets someone who can transform them into a human kind as well as a vampire.

Film 4:

The splatter genre is full of guts and gore to extreme extents in the main horror genre. This genre specifically focusses on gore and graphic portrayals. This genre focusses on this type of horror because it wants to show the vulnerability of the human body. The amount of graphic, sex and violence almost turns the platter genre in to cold porn. The killer tends to have a cutting weapon which represents the phallic symbol. The splatter genre was mainly inspired by other films like the thirteen women (1932) and other films like peeping tom (1960). Splatter films are generally have unknown killers at first and then by the end of the film the killer is revealed. The killer tends to not show their faces or they have masks on. The splatter plot often has a twist at the end. The killer often kills in this sub-genre because they have an eventful past. The splatter genre also has a final girl to survive. In the splatter film there is shown to be a protagonist, antagonist and a group of other people. The adult and police are often shown as to not understand the victims.

One film I will be researching in the genre of splatter from the main genre of horror is the film saw. This film was released in 2004. It’s a film with lots of gore and about torturing and killing. This is a poster representing the film.

In this poster there is shown;

• The woman on the poster is only showing her hard and her eyes are shown to be big and bold. This suggests she is in shock or frightened of something.
• The woman is wearing a torturing head helmet with all these belts and wires joined on to it. This suggests she is going to be tortured to love of die. This gives the audience the sense that this horror film has extreme gore and it will be over whelming.
• The poster image is in black and white which suggest the film will have the fear of the unknown and that gives the audience insecurity.

The storyline is that a killer called Jigsaw gets and captures victims that need to be punished. The killer doesn’t kill his victims but the victim has to kill one another to survive. The two men who wake up to find themselves in a bathroom with their ankles chained to pipes realise that there task is to kill one another with the saws in the bath or their family will get hurt. They have to do this by 6:00. The main idea is the killer wants to see how far people would go to survive.

The keywords used in this film are killer, flashback, bathroom, torture and serial killer.

The equilibrium is a good start two different men are living a happy life. The disequilibrium is that a killer called Jigsaw is out there capturing people and making the people tortures themselves to survive this life game he has planned. The equilibrium is that the people who jigsaw has trapped have to try and escape alive.

There was seen as five other Saw series and there was a Saw 3D version. The full series of saw has made profit and it has been very popular in the horror category.

Film 5:

Psychological thriller is a combination of sub genres such as mystery and thriller. It is the idea of reality people’s unconscious desires which are combined into one to make a horror film. Psychological and supernatural elements are examples such as Ghosts and supernatural would be seen in human life such as witchcraft.

One film I will be researching in the genre of psychological and supernatural is poltergeist. This film was released in 1982. It’s a film about supernatural and the unknown. Here is a poster advertising the film.

In this poster there is shown;

• · The T.V screen is in black and white and there seems to be a glowing light coming out from the T.V screen. This gives the effect of terror in the audience eyes.
• ·  There is shown to be a little girl touching the T.V screen with a teddy bear on the floor. This suggests that the girl is very venerable and unaware of the situation. The girl touching the T.V screen is shown to be innocent and weak.
• · The poster is in pitch darkness with one image in the centre this shows that the main focus point is the girl and the T.V screen of the poster gives the sense of mystery.

The storyline is that there is that there is an ordinary family living in a normal house, when all of a sudden ghosts start appearing. The ghosts at first look friendly and only move objects for their amusement but then they change and turn out to be horrific as they terrorise the family by controlling trees and dolls. Then the youngest daughter Carol Anne gets kidnapped by them into their world.

The equilibrium is that it’s a normal family in a perfectly normal house with a nice neighbourhood. The disequilibrium is that ghosts start to appear and move objects around. They start of friendly them to go extreme lengths through other objects and they kidnap the youngest family remember Carol Anne. The equilibrium is that the family go and get help and they remove the ghosts and get Carol Anne back.

Film 6:

The supernatural genre is making the human in human; by subverting and using make believe. An example of the supernatural is folklore and fairy tales.

One film I will be researching for the supernatural genre idea is Paranormal Activity. This film was released in 2009. It’s a film about ghosts in a person’s home. This is a poster representing the film.

In this poster there is shown;

• A normal house with the furniture in a normal positioning. This suggests what the family are being haunted and give the audience the idea of curiosity.
• In the poster there is shown to be a couple sitting on the bed but they looked shocked due to the couple both looking towards the door and the female is pointing towards the door. This would create a mystery on the audience and will engage them to go and see the film.
• As the women are pointing at the door there is a dark shadow on the door, it is tall and thin. This would encourage the audience to go and watch it as it gives the sense of questioning and this would engage the audience even more.
• The poster image shows us through a bedroom camera and it show the time it was shot. This almost makes the film look real and genuine.

The equilibrium is that a family is move into a normal home. The disequilibrium is that the family are disturbed and Katie has been haunted by ghost since she was eight the ghost starts to get more active in the night. The equilibrium is that they get a friend to help them out with their problem.

There were three paranormal activity films after the first and they were all released recently.

Film 7:

The zombie genre is all about normal humans who get bitten and they convert into flesh eating humans. The zombie genre is a main genre in the horror category however this genre can subvert into comedy, thriller, and science fiction and sometimes romance. George A’ Romero is known as the “godfather the zombie films”. He has contributed to films such as Dawn of the dead, Day of the dead and Night of the dead.

The film I will be researching will be Dawn of the dead. This film was released in 1978. The film is all about zombies and the society they live in. This is a poster advertising the film.

In this poster there is shown;

• The design shows the sun rising but in this case it shows a person rising from the horizon. I gathered that the person is rising from the first dawn which is sunrise. The audience find this amusing is it word play.
• In the horizon there is shown to be a person rising. The person is all white with bits of red on one side of his face and one ear. This suggest that the person is the zombie rising form the dead, this then suggest to the audience the idea of mystery because the red bits on his face could represent blood.
• The person is not showing all their face which signifies his identity is unknown. This gives the audience a frightened but confused feeling on whether he is antagonist of not.
• The person on the horizon has big dark eyes almost suggesting he is a zombie. This gives the audience the idea that they are being watched, which makes them insecure.

The plot is that from the continuing of Night of the Dead there is a society crisis as people are finding it hard to protect themselves. The government is trying to help but they keep failing. There are shown to be human flesh eating people going around eating normal people. There are a group of characters who are trying to escape and in the end only two people escape by working a helicopter.

The key words I have used are mail, Sequel, shopping mail, flesh eating zombies and eating flesh.

The equilibrium is that normal people all of a sudden noticing that there are people eating other people. The disequilibrium is that more and more people are getting eaten and are turning into zombies. The equilibrium is that left over normal people have escaped from the zombies.

Film 8:

Monster films are another genre in the horror category. Monster films are films which associates the idea that humans and animals don’t get along. The monster genre is mainly to have a monster extremely oversized ort large. The monster idea is to have a fictional character usually found and to create it as the antagonists. The monster is not to have good looking features. The idea of monsters came from myths, folklore and legends such as Medusa.

One film I will be investigating is Jaws. This film was made in the 1975. The film is a monster film from the horror category. This is a poster advertising the film.

In this poster there is shown;

• ·   The poster is shown to have the monster or shark as the centre point, while the shark is showing its sharp teeth. This gives the audience insecurity and fear because this animal does exist.
• ·   The shark is shown to be pointing its body upright under a person. This suggests the shark is alert and waiting for their pray.
• ·   The person is shown to be unaware of the shark and is swimming casually. This suggests that no one is secure at sea and that humanity has no power with animals. This gives the audience shock and it un-comforting because they can relate to it in reality.

The plot is that one officer finds a died victim after a shark attack and he tries to close the beach down to swimmers. Then several people go out to catch this shark for this big reward money because a month before a son got killed from a mother and she was giving this big reward money to those who find this creature and kill it. Then the people at sea get trapped and the shark starts attacking.

The equilibrium is that the beach is open for holidays and travellers are coming and going. The disequilibrium is that the there is a shark out at sea killing people at sea. The equilibrium is to catch and kill the shark before he carries on killing more and more victims.

There have been a few other sequels after the first jaws film they haven’t been much profit as the first.

Film 9:

J- Horror is a shorter way of saying Japanese horror. Japanese is seen as a very popular horror fiction in the modern century. Japanese horror tends to have conventional elements of horror as well as the thematic elements. Japanese films from past years have been re-made again because of the profits they make. The films that have been remade are, Ring, Grudge etc. The films that were re-made also have had some title changes. Japanese horror tends to focus on the psychological horror. These made include ghosts, poltergeists, possessions, and exorcisms. The common antagonists in the Japanese horror are the yurei. The yore is Japanese ghosts which depend on emotions. These are particular type of ghosts. In Japanese folklore they believe that the yurei is a ghost which if they were killed with violence of all of a sudden then they say on earth until their situation is sorted out. Is a person dies natural or peacefully the ghost will not exist or turn into yurei. The yurei is a female who where’s white clothing. They have long black hair and its left untied which comes from the tradition that Japanese women grow their hair and pin it up and they would release their hair when in funeral.

One film I will be investigating form the genre of Japanese horror is called one miss call. This film was released on 2003/2004. This film connoted the conventions of yurei. This is a poster advertising the film.

In this poster there is shown;

• · A young girl with a shocked face. Her eyes are looking straight and her mouth is a little open. This suggests that the girl is in danger and the girl is in shock because she looks frozen. This gives the audience suspense of what will happen next.
• · The girl is shown to be holding a mobile phone which represents the film’s title and which creates mystery to its audience.
• · As the girl is in shock there is shown that a there is a hand on her shoulder suggesting the girl is in danger. The hand also builds tension as to who the mystery killer is, suggesting this idea creates curiosity.
• · In the background there is shown to be another girl with long black hair upside down. This could suggest one of the scenes in the film or it could be showing the killer.

The female protagonist has to save herself and her friends live.

The thriller genre is another genre from the horror category. It creates suspense tension and excitement as it is the main elements. The thriller genre is only included to the category because there is shown a lot of graphic content in the film. The thriller genre is mainly about investigation than the other genres such as splatter and slasher. The thriller genre contains more action and adventure.

In the genre of thriller from the category of horror I will be researching on the film called Misery. This film was released on 1990. This is a poster advertising the film.

In this poster there is shown;

• · An isolated house in the middle of the mountains. This suggests that the victim will be trapped there. This also gives the audience the suspense of what’s going to happen.
• · As the house is in the middle no where there is also the word misery all around that little house. The word misery is repeated continuously. This gives the audience that the person or victim is not happy or in so sort of danger.
• · The house is isolated and it’s the time around winter because in the poster the weather is shown as its snowing. This gives the idea that there is no way out of there. The emotion it builds would be mystery and vulnerability.

The plot is that one of the bestselling novelists Paul Sheldon is on his way home after completing his latest book when he crashes his car in the blizzard. Paul is then critically injured but then he is rescued by his number one fan Annie Wikers. She takes Paul back to her house without telling anyone. Annie then started switching when she finds that Paul has killed off the heroine on her favourite novels. She torchers Paul and makes him plead for mercy.
